Demonstration of 'drowning' the Meadows

Watermeadows are traditionally irrigated (‘drowned’) during the winter and early spring, this brings forward the ‘early bite’ of grass for livestock.

The traditional purpose of 'drowning' was to trickle warm river water over cold land and encourage early grass growth.
To comply with the requirements from Natural England for HLS status (Higher Level Stewardship) we are obliged to 'drown' the meadows several times each winter.

The demonstrations take place in January and February, the dates under in the Calendar below.

We meet at 10.00am at Rose Cottage, Town Path, West Harnham, Salisbury SP2 8EU. The Cottage is located over the radial gates on the river Nadder (south branch) located behind the Old Mill Hotel. The demonstration will last about one hour.

There is no charge, but there will be opportunity for a donation to the trust to be made at the end of the demonstration.

Please wear wellington boots and warm clothing. We regret that no dogs are allowed on the meadows.

Illustrated Talks

Illustrated power point talks about the Trust and its work can be given either at Rose Cottage or at your venue within a reasonable distance from Salisbury. Talks are given by our trained speakers. To arrange this please telephone 01722 340212.

New ‘Short’ Walk

For those with lesser walking ability, or lesser time, we have created a shorter walk over the Meadows, starting from Rose Cottage garden. This has involved new gates and bridges, which have been paid for partly from our reserves and partly from a grant to the Trust which was specifically to be used for improvements to the infrastructure of the Meadows.

Please note that special arrangements for guided walks and talks at any time can be made by contacting 01722 340212.
